Wow, this is a good list! I know cracked.com did an article on writing stories, and this is all really useful!

May I suggest this site then? It's where I've currently been reading:

Fuck Yeah Character Development

It has great tips from a wide range of topics other than character development like developing a setting and how to approach dialogue.

enoby_wayenoby_way on February 21st, 2014 03:53 pm (UTC)
That's really interesting! I'll check it out!

I had a look at the narcissist one that you linked to, and while it has the core details down, it's actually missing a lot of what being a narcissist is all about. I don't have a tumblr, so I can't correct them, but actually speaking as a narcissist, it's really quite easy to spot what's missing in there.

Do you know anywhere that talks about metaphors, writing emotion or even describing actions? I'm pretty good at character-writing, but my narrative tends to get beige when I want to describe something that's happening.
(ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*: ・゚✧: Kobato Yellowbluecherrybomb on February 21st, 2014 04:24 pm (UTC)
Not a problem! I agree, some of these do miss a lot of the core topics but it's a good starting point. Sometimes I just read these to get motivated to write. (I mean, I'm currently writing a Narcissist so it is good to know that there is more I'll have to research. Thank you for bringing that to light!)

Ah, metaphors. I'll have to dig. I did recall seeing a post on them but it may have been an offhand quote.

Describing Actions, I have this saved: Writing Fight Scenes and there's List of actions. If you mean more natural actions, I'd have to check around. I'm sure somewhere has it. There's a good source of tumblr writing blogs I follow that may have something if this isn't right.

Posts with emotions...A bit harder. Not many tags with it. I did find dealing with Stress Right Here which is probably not what you're looking for but it's a good starting point as it sort of explores how you would deal with stress (which then you emote to your characters and how would you portray that) and there's lists of emotive words Emotions Vocabulary there.

This might help more: The Ultimate Guide
It's full of resources for writing which may help too.
enoby_wayenoby_way on February 21st, 2014 04:33 pm (UTC)
Oh, yeah. With narcissism, a lot of what goes on can't actually be helped. It's like, sometimes it's born from a low self-esteem, or social awkwardness (even abuse and bullying). With me, I can't talk to people in real life, so the only conversations I can have without screwing up TOO badly are about me, things I like and things I hate.
It's actually very inconvenient. There's a definite black-and-white morality. A lot of people say that it's all down to thinking that you're right and everyone else is wrong, but it's also down to how you see the world as well. There's a lack of empathy that doesn't allow you to recognise emotions, even your own (that's very difficult to live with). A lot of people mistake being shallow with being a narcissist, and vice versa, so if you want help for your character then I'd be happy to give you a few tips!

It's mostly any actions, but natural ones are still hard to write (I'm glad for the smut and kissing ones, though. Thank God. Those are gonna help a lot).

I'm going to bookmark this page; there are so many good links here that I'll want to refer to in my writing.
(ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*: ・゚✧: Kobato Yellowbluecherrybomb on February 21st, 2014 04:42 pm (UTC)
Wow, do you mind if I copy down what you said? It would be great for my notes and a whole new level of depth!
While the character I don't think was influenced by bullying or abuse, I do agree that it's not always 'I'm right and you're wrong' all the time. That bugged me a little because sometimes people can be humbled. And yeah, black-and-white moralities always bother me. I really dislike 'They're a bad person because they're not being nice to me, villify them!'

I can look more for any type of intimate tips. I write a TON of smut so I would really like to pad out that section more anyways. Most tips I come across assume you are writing a novel and sometimes, well, I just want to write a killer fanfic. That's adult. *coughs*

Go right ahead, I encourage it! I still have more to add, especially when it comes to multiple characters/traits. I need practice on that end very badly.
enoby_wayenoby_way on February 21st, 2014 04:52 pm (UTC)
Of course you can!
See, for me, my black-and-white morality is more like 'Criminals don't deserve the same rights as the rest of us,' without going into the grey areas. I agree with you on what you said, though I will say that when it comes down to it, if someone hates me, I return the favour in my own semi-neurotic way (then again, I'm all kinds of messed up).
There's also different kinds of narcissism; I'm a fanatic narcissist, so while I don't think highly of myself, I have fantasies where I'm famous, and people love me (except for bad writers, but only so I can discredit them).

Yeah, I write both fanfics as well as books, and unfortunately, you don't really get much specialised tips. You generally have to know a lot of fansites to get information that you can't find elsewhere, and most of those are on tumblr (which I avoid like the plague).
(ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*: ・゚✧: Kobato Yellowbluecherrybomb on February 21st, 2014 07:41 pm (UTC)
Ahahaha I take any Good versus Evil that's not in say, a children's book as black and white morality. No one is just solely evil just like no one is a shining beacon of light but a lot of fics I read are like that. Or they put the villain as super sympathetic and the hero as a raging dick and just... characterizations all over the place a little depth. I could go on for a while over it since I just hate Bad Vs. Good end of story type of stuff.

Ahahaha oh bad writers. So many fics I've read and cringed.
And I don't blame you over tumblr. I actually came back here to Livejournal because of that website. It holds a lot of good information which I will use (why not? Free advice!) but it doesn't make up for just what a toxic place it is.

enoby_wayenoby_way on February 22nd, 2014 12:25 am (UTC)
See, I can write people with a grey morality, because I am very much a character writer; there are two things I pride myself on: my ability to write believable characters, and my ability to write parodies. It's just that when it comes down to me, I prefer not to get into the grey area, because I believe it opens up excuses for people (like child abusers- especially sexual- getting less time because the child started it, or because the offender was fucked up in the head. That's a very sensitive subject for me.).
Funny thing though, a lot of fantasy work is pretty much Good vs Evil, but my fantasy book that I'm writing has a very prominent grey morality; there is racism, which the people believe is justified but the point that I'm trying to make with it discounts that (basically, it's like white people these days can't, and shouldn't, be blamed for slavery), also there is a lot of manipulation and conflicting thoughts that goes on there.

I remember seeing a few tumblr pictures that pissed me off; one of them was Frerard (Gerard Way and Frank Iero of My Chemical Romance), and it was just text talking about how Gerard only married Lindsey because she was his rebound, and he was in love with Frank, but didn't want to hurt his wife, and that Frank was acting the same. None of this was portrayed in a negative light and everyone was like '*sighs* Frerard!', while I was insulted for saying that it was horrible and how wrong it was considering the people, because of what they actually are like! They wouldn't do that to each other or their wives.
Tumblr just comes off to me as being very conceited, and the people on their always seem to me like they're saying 'Ooh, tumlr is THE PLACE TO BE is you're into fandoms. Whovians! Sherlock fans!' (I detest the word 'Whovian' because the people that use it only know Matt and David's seasons, and think that Matt Smith was the best Doctor EVAH because he was 'cool' and 'funny', when he was a very egotistical, whiny, conceited brat who tried way to hard to impress people. He wasn't natural.)

Livejournal, at least, is more of a community, than tumblr. And as much as everyone insults FF.net, at least it's not tumblr

(As you can see, I rant a lot)
(ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*: ・゚✧: Kobato Yellowbluecherrybomb on February 22nd, 2014 12:55 am (UTC)
Blergh. I've watched enough SVU to openly say if someone tries to make me sympathize with a Child Molestor/Serial Killer, I will laugh. LAUGH. And then tell them no. Like no. I will read he-said she-said scenarios, watch a lot of things that make me question right and wrong but ahahaha no. You cannot fix a sociopath. I do not like pedophiles. No. Come to think of it, I should throw that one.

Anyways, as for your story, see, I would read that. I like when Fantasy worlds challenge things. Don't get me wrong, I will read LOTR and cheer when Sauron is defeated and see the bad guys as corrupted and evil and etc. But that's what I want going in. And it did it so well. Now days if I pick up a fantasy book (usually Young Adult despite me being out of that range) it goes from an interesting fantasy world to The Main Guy/Girl going to kick some smarmy, Intelligent Villain in the ass because said Villain is a dick to them and bad. It turns into Gary Stu versus the Jerk and I really can't deal with black and white ideals like that where Self Insert wins and everyone loves them. Or a trope is thrown in like Rape as a Backstory or Orphan to get sympathy for the stu/sue which the villain caused. If that makes sense.

I just like challenging things and so much of what I've taken out at the library these days either follows the Twilight realm of ugggh sexy teenagers being sexy or I'll Get You Next Time, Gadget! and cue six more books of sexual tension, running around and me reading more fanfiction than actual novels because of it.

Ugh, I don't watch Doctor Who or Sherlock or Supernatural, or any of the big TV shows that tumblr creams themselves over because a lot of those fans are incredibly rude on there. And I think real people shipping is really creepy. Like there is being a fan of something and then being completely obsessed and psychotic about it. Harrassing actors wives is extremely rude. Harrassing non-fans is rude. Hijacking posts, sending anon hate, treating Britain like the most educated and brilliant place on earth because of a show, shoving ships down people's throats... Like I barely go on there because it's become a place for humorless dicks and intolerance.

So I sort of understand your pain about it. I think I've seen the eighth doctor once in a gifset. The other doctors don't exist.
enoby_wayenoby_way on February 22nd, 2014 01:50 am (UTC)
Thanks!
'Or a trope is thrown in like Rape as a Backstory or Orphan to get sympathy for the stu/sue which the villain caused. If that makes sense. '

See, the main character (I'll use his name to make it easier), Shai, does have rape/orphanage as his backstory, but here's why:
He grew up in what's called the Outskirts, which are the poorest area of Magkna (the country) because that's where the people who can't live in the slums of the Inner City (the capital). They are secluded, and the houses are so far apart, it is impossible to tell how many people live there. The place where Shai lives is close to the Southern Forest, more specifically, the area inhabited by Bandits.
I'll give a little background; Shai's race (he's actually half-Minion, or Magknan, and half-Albretchnan). The Minions are the main species, and the Albretchnans come into it later.
There was a MInion, called Lutzark, who captured the Bandit Queen. He's the major, major villain that everyone is supposed to hate (though in the sequel, he is called on to help the protagonists). He demanded, in exchange, Shai, who was eight at the time and was learning sorcery. The Bandits took him from his home, killed his father, and he ended up being a slave (which was very illegal) to Lutzark. There is a reason for his being sexually abused than just for development, and that's the significance; in Magkna, while homosexuality is legal, it's tolerated, because the main ways that people know of it are the master-slave forced relations, and so being referred to as homosexual has a lot of horrific implications on the MInion. It only happened to Shai when he was fourteen, as even Lutzark had to draw the line at paedophilia.
As for the orphan thing... Shai eventually reached the Palace in the Inner City (long story), and everyone was lied to by Eitri, the Prince's advisor, that Shai's entire family had been murdered by Bandits (where it was just his father), which led to Shai being adopted by the Emperor (who was the Prince's brother)- that wasn't in Eitri's plan.

(I know, that was a lot to read. Sorry, there's more to come.)

'me reading more fanfiction than actual novels because of it.'

Oh, God. I see you like Pokemon, well there's a few amazing Pokemon fanfics that deal with sensitive issues, like self-harm and attempted suicide (one of them being about my favourite character, Gary). That's my main fandom, and it's just so... why can't authors write like this, you know?

'And I think real people shipping is really creepy.'

See, here's the thing; I actually ship Gerard and Frank, but not a whole lot. I might read a fanfic about the two of them, but I treat them as fictionalised versions of themselves. I'm glad that they're happy with their wives, but there's just the hotness of seeing the two of them snogging on stage, like they used to. (I'm not creepy about it, I just treat it as any ordinary ship)

'treating Britain like the most educated and brilliant place on earth because of a show,'

*snorts* People do that? I'm actually from England, and I'd have a lot to disagree about with that! Our schools basically keep making exams harder, because too many people are getting good grades, we're full of chavs and hipsters, get people famous because of reality shows and X Factor, and make shitty soap operas. If they're going to praise us, at least make it something real, like how perfect we are at wit, and sarcasm and insulting other countries to make up for losing Eurovision constantly (that's one of my reasons anyway; I think of it this way, Americans are racist, while the English are xenophobic- we poke a LOT more fun at foreign countries than America does, just look at Frankie Boyle).

'So I sort of understand your pain about it. I think I've seen the eighth doctor once in a gifset. The other doctors don't exist.'

I've only seen the Revival, and I'm boycotting the new stuff anyway because I hate Clara SO MUCH. She's the biggest Doctor Who Mary-Sue ever written, I swear. My favourite Doctor though, is Christopher Ecclestone (the 9th), because he from up north (lots of planets have a north). Actually, he was a brilliant character, but hey.
(ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*: ・゚✧: Kobato Yellowbluecherrybomb on February 22nd, 2014 02:46 am (UTC)
I am very interested in this world you've created.
Bandits killing your family is acceptable I say. I've come across that enough in barbaric worlds to know it happens (srsly. I'm way too deep into games). Kids become orphans since lawlessness rules. I'm opposed to it a lot because it comes off as unoriginal in the majority of stories. Fanfics in particular. OC's family was all murdered and she grows up constantly being raped until she escapes, finds a man to heal her with his penis and insert 74 chapters of prose and needless drama. I've seen it so many times I just click off the box.

It doesn't seem like your character falls into the MUST AVENGE MY FAMILY (cut to years of rape and then healed with a dick insert 75 chapters of prose) and you do build a world to justify it for the better. Besides, you've created this world, correct? Your laws rule so the mythos you make and your backstories all are your logic so, ahaha, someone like me? Puh! You don't have to ultra justify yourself! This is your story and you know what works! Do as you want!

As for book authors, I have no idea. I mean, I've come across a lot of VERY BAD FICS. Like OH MY GOD THE TIME I HAVE WASTED. But shit, some of them, if they wrote a novel I would buy it. Most people take sensitive issues and just use it as an excuse for the lead to have someone heal them with their body.

Ahahahahahaha yeah I love Pokemon. I haven't actually delved deep into a lot of Pokemon fics (holy crap FF.net, like it would take me 10 years to read all that) but I don't doubt there's great ones out there.

I think real people shipping is creepy because srsly, tumblr. The two guys from Supernatural and even Sherlock is like whoa. If you ship two people IRL, fine. But DON'T harrass them, send death threats to their wives, tell them you ship them IN PERSON WITH THE PHOTO YOU DREW OF IT like UGH MY SECOND HAND EMBARRASSMENT. That's my issue. It's... augh.

And yeah, your country is ridiculously put on a pedestal because of television. Every British Show is a work of gold (my friend will laugh at this. She always says HAVE YOU SEEN MRS BROWNS BOYS) and everyone is posh, victorian, and apparently as handsome as Benedict Cumberbatch and David Beckham combined. Ahahaha Eurovision ahahahaha. Like there's girls I've met in University who have told me what a cultural haven Britain is and then I'm the dick who reminds them Brits give not shits about Canadians unless they're mad at us.

Shit right the 9th I meant. I get them confused. The 9th is never paid attention to, David Tennent is the 10th and God of Tumblr and whatshisface is the 11th and just quit or something. I still try not to get involved. That show is srsbsns to so many and I wouldn't even know where to begin.
enoby_wayenoby_way on February 23rd, 2014 12:23 pm (UTC)
Thanks! I've been trying to actually write it for a while now, but it's actually so difficult to start it off; it's getting the exposition right so the readers are eased into the world, and also keeping the style consistent. While I'm not going for Tolkien-esque finesse, or purple prose the levels of Eragon, I'm still aiming for a formal style.

'finds a man to heal her with his penis and insert 74 chapters of prose and needless drama. I've seen it so many times I just click off the box.'

That's basically the requirement for YA novels these days.

There's a Percy Jackson fanfic that I read a while back where Annabeth had cancer, and Percy was a homeless nihilist, and they were at the same school. The writer actually wrote the characters well, so that even though Annabeth did develop over the course of the fanfic, her core character (for the fic) never actually changed; she still had the same values, and was still herself, but she matured and changed for the better (and the ending, oh... the ending). The writer started rewriting it so that it would be their own fiction, with the main plot points being changed so they weren't just changing the names like E.L. James.

...People actually send death threats? Oh God... and here I thought that was just reserved for Beliebers bitching at Selena Gomez....

*twitches* I hate Mrs. Brown's Boys. It's only drive is 'dirty granny', and people take it as funny. The writers can't break the fourth wall properly, so it's completely out of place, it's stupid, the characters are generic, and is pretty much our version of Family Guy/American Dad!.
I still don't understand the appeal of Benedict Cumberbatch. He looks like he's been hit in the face with a shovel (like Matt Smith, actually). David Beckham... Eh, he's okay, but we have Alan Rickman to fawn over. Ah... Alan.

CULTURAL HAVEN?! There're not English, right? No English person would say that! Sure, we're 'multicultural', but everyone HATES the foreigners that have come in! We've got Polish, Indian, Filipino, Thai, Chinese, and pretty much a mix and match of foreign people. There aren't a ton of people saying 'These foreigners coming over here, stealing our jobs.' for nothing. It's got to the point where in Leicester (where I was born and lived in for seven years), which is a big city, white British people are the minority. My country is very bitter about that fact.

Posh? Victorian? Handsome? *snorts* The only posh people we get are Southerners and Old Money. I'm from the East Midlands, working-class, says 'grass' instead of 'grarse' and use East Midlands/Yorkshire slang. That's not just me, either.
Handsome... Nope. Have those people SEEN the chavs we have? Oh my God.

Aw, you're Canadian? I'd say that the fact that we pretty much ignore you is down to you guys giving us Justin Bieber, but you also have Buckley, and he's freaking awesome.
Canada's more of a source of amusement than anything else. It's the accent, eh? (Sorry, couldn't help it)

Oh no, Matt Smith is the God of Tumblr. He's all anyone cares for; the only reason they like David is because he's pretty, and he's a great actor (and to the 'fans'- HE'S SCOTTISH, NOT ENGLISH!), and he's just... David...
Chris, however, he was the Doctor. He had the dry, northern wit, and he's from Lancashire, the dear. Doctor Who went downhill the moment Russel T Davies left, (or when Donna became a companion, she sucked).
(ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*: ・゚✧: Kobato Yellowbluecherrybomb on February 23rd, 2014 04:02 pm (UTC)
Ahahaha the purple prose... I will always revere Tolkien but when people copy it, it gets old. I agree that elves shouldn't all be the aryan race of beauty and perfection, changes need to be made but I still pick up books about supermodel elves..

Ugh E.L. James. I'm glad for that author changing things which is nice. It sounds like a good story! But fuuuuu the mention of 50 Shades of Not Okay. *writhes*

*chuckles* My best friend's Dad gets the paper from either Lancaster or Edinburgh or Manchester or wherever his sister currently lives, I can't recall and he's stood there and had a very long conversation with me over his bitterness over Brits being the Minority. Like even oversea Brits are bitter.

And her parents are the ones that watch Mrs. Brown's Boys and Coronation Street religiously, hence how I found out. Oh brother, there was a couple others she's mentioned. We always refer to those programs as 'When the Whistle Blows' types so I tend to forget the actual names. Just... yep. I'm completely aware that when it comes to Britain, there is ridiculous beauty and rich history but it doesn't change the fact that people will laugh at crass jokes like everywhere else in the world. But nope, a few girls I met in real life chatted about going to England and how posh and wonderful it will be (unlike here) and I was like 'lol ok'.

Or yeah, the appeal of odd looking celebrities. Ahahaha Alan Rickman. I still yell every time Sense and Sensibility comes on that if whatsherface LOOKED at Colonel Brandon then that movie would have ended faster instead of her going after Willoughby. Like come ON. But yes, Matt Smith is the god of the tumblr Who fandom, David is liked and gifs of him are about and... everyone doesn't pay attention to Chris. I assume because he's not HANDSOME UND PRETTY or whatever. Charactization seems to mean very little to tumblr.

Ahaha, no, it's not reserved for Bieber. Fangirls are nuts. And the whole Britain-Canada thing comes down past Bieber or whatever. Usually when our country is mentioned, it's either negative (eg. The Olympics) or to laugh at us. Even when talking to Canadian-Brits or tourists it keeps going to 'Yeah, this country is okay. BRITAIN THOUGH AMMIRITE' and I'm like 'Ahahaa... oh.' I will admit though, I do get the frustration over a lack of good tea at the supermarkets here which comes up frequently.

Yep! Even better if they're Scottish or Welsh, because they hate England, so when people lump us all together, it's fun to see them get pissed off.
I guess you mentioned what I said to him then? Heheh, he sounds awesome, I like him.

'But nope, a few girls I met in real life chatted about going to England and how posh and wonderful it will be (unlike here) and I was like 'lol ok'.'

*stares* Wow. I guess by 'England' they mean 'London' (as always), but even then... London is really drab, though I've only been there once, and that was to the Globe Theatre. The nicer places to be are like around Yorkshire, because of the scenery.
If you want an accurate depiction of England (well, Yorkshire), watch Heartbeat. It's a police drama, but it's so, so perfect.

Oh, Sense and Sensibility... I love that film. Just seeing Alan smiling and happy at the end makes me happy.
...I find Chris handsome. He's got a rugged charm to him.

'I will admit though, I do get the frustration over a lack of good tea at the supermarkets here which comes up frequently.'

The best tea is Yorkshire Tea (the brand, that is). It's got such a good quality, PGTips envies it.
(Yes, I do obsess over tea, what's wrong with that? XD)

My best friend from up north (I actually moved south two years ago- in between Leicester and the Isle of Wight, I lived in Nottinghamshire) has a cousin who moved to Canada. I met her once or twice, she was quite nice.

So, do you know who Adam Buckley is, then? Because I know he's a radio host, but I've only heard him through YouTube, and I doubt he has the same, sarcastic, cynical personality as when on air.
